Teens Need More Sleep Than Adults

BIOVEA Sleep Products: The sleep patterns of the age group most likely to get little or interrupted sleep is interestingly upside down. The ages between 12 and 25 years have been found to need more sleep than those of older age groups, but many get far less instead.
The National Sleep Foundation recently did a study focused on the sleep patterns of teens and adolescents as related to issues that affect them. Driving drowsy and inability to focus while learning or working are just two potential hazards of getting less sleep than one needs.
Automobile accidents that are caused by sleepiness involve those under age 25 about half of the time. This is when compared to all other age groups of drivers. Those in the under 25 group have other focus issues that are potentially dangerous as well. Since 1500 people are killed in drowsy driving accidents each year in America alone, this is something that should be addressed and improved upon.
The danger of driving or operating machinery or equipment while sleepy and unable to react appropriately is not the only danger in living on less sleep than you need. Young adults are usually engaged in the learning process, either in high schools or colleges or are involved in trade training schools. The learning curve is prevalent in this age group and they need to be sharp and with their brains functioning on all cylinders. When sleep is lacking, the ability to absorb and retain information is not occurring at the desired and optimum levels.
Part of the reason for lack of sleep in this vulnerable age group is the concept that they are invincible and can take on the world with hardly a wink of sleep. Not true, of course, but without guidance to the contrary, it is all too common. Nights spent texting friends with their cell phones in bed, staying up to post on social media sites, and playing games with online competitors, or doing intense amounts of study for finals, are all potential causes for too little rest.

The younger children in the 12-25 age group are, of course, still growing and must take in proper rest and nutrition so their bodies will grow properly. This may be the last thing your newly and fiercely independent teen wants to hear from you no matter how true it may be. Encourage healthy sleep habits whenever possible and you may see a difference in their ability to cope with daily life.
